Research Overview:

Our research group is interested in understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, especially Alzheimer's disease. Our work focuses on changes dependent on the aging of glia, and on the participation of glial cells, intrinsically able to be part of both protective and deleterious processes in health and disease conditions of the central nervous system.

Our research focuses on biomarkers relevant for the diagnosis of degenerative diseases and on the fundamental principles of glia function at several different levels, ranging from molecular approximations to studies in the intact nervous system, combining biochemical, morphological, transgenic animal models, cell culture, neurocognitive and behavioral assessment and physiological methods, to elucidate the molecular bases of glial cell activation and changes in the modulatory mechanisms underlying the increase of its cytotoxic activation.

Recent results of our laboratory have shown that aging is accompanied by changes in inflammatory activation of microglia and cytokine-mediated modulatory signaling that participates in the regulation of inflammation, TGFβ. We have further shown that these changes in TGFβ result in changes in the expression of receptors that are relevant for the clearance of β-amyloid, the protein that forms senile plaques, characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. Our results reveal that changes associated with aging can favor the development of Alzheimer's disease, and the importance of the pattern of activation of microglia in cytotoxicity and resulting neurodegenerative changes.
