Contribuyendo al desarrollo de la ortopedia y traumatología. 

Les invitamos a conocer nuestro Departamento de Ortopedia y Traumatología en sus diversas actividades. Está constituido por médicos cirujanos especialistas en cirugía ortopédica y traumatológica, que desarrollan su actividad académica y asistencial en la Red Salud UC, centradas en el Hospital Clínico UC, el centro médico San Joaquín y la Clínica UC San Carlos de Apoquindo, así como en la unidad docente asociada del Hospital Sótero del Río.

El desarrollo de la especialidad ha ido de la mano con la creciente prevalencia de lesiones músculo-esqueléticas asociadas a accidentes traumáticos y la práctica deportiva, la mayor esperanza de vida de nuestra población y al aumento de las expectativas de nuestros pacientes respecto a la magnitud y velocidad de recuperación y, por lo tanto, el retorno precoz a sus actividades de la vida diaria. En respuesta a estos cambios, se explica la gran evolución han tenido la Cirugía Reconstructiva Articular y la Cirugía mínimamente invasiva con técnicas artroscópicas.

Nuestro objetivo principal es el desarrollo de la Ortopedia y Traumatología a nivel universitario, a través de sus centros de atención de la Red de Salud, otorgando una asistencia médica de excelencia que permita realizar la docencia de pregrado y postgrado en un ambiente académico, estimulando la investigación clínica, de laboratorio y actividades de extensión, bajo los principios que rigen a la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, y en la Red de Salud UC.

Historia

La Ortopedia y la Traumatología se inició en la Facultad de Medicina de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile en la década del 40 junto con los inicios del Hospital Clínico.

En el año 1990, se reinicia la atención sistemática de Ortopedia y Traumatología en el Hospital Clínico UC.  Progresivamente fue aumentando la capacidad docente  y asistencial de este grupo, lo que permitió el crecimiento del Programa de Formación de la Especialidad. En 1996 adquiere la categoría de Departamento, por Decreto de Rectoría de la Pontificia Universidad Católica,  y se incorpora a los  Departamentos de la División de Cirugía

Actualmente, el Departamento se conforma por 28 académicos sub especializados en las principales  áreas de la especialidad.  El Programa de Especialización cuenta con 7 residentes por año y están complementando su formación especialistas en estadías de perfeccionamiento en diferentes áreas de la Ortopedia y Traumatología. Por lo mismo, tenemos un cuerpo médico superior a los 50 profesionales.

Docencia

Nuestro departamento desarrolla la docencia de Ortopedia y Traumatología en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, tanto en cursos de formación general, como dentro de la Facultad de Medicina, en cursos de pregrado: anatomía (aparato locomotor, 1er año), curso de la especialidad en 4to año e internado, y en un programa de postgrado de 3 años de duración, extensible a un cuarto año de subespecialidad.

Pregrado

4° Año MEC-246 Capítulo de Traumatología y Ortopedia
Se encuentra constituido por un capítulo de Ortopedia y Traumatología teórico realizado a través de clases, de los temas más importantes a conocer por un médico general, lo cual es complementado con una labor práctica, llevado a cabo, tanto en nuestro Hospital Clínico como en el centro Médico San Joaquín y el Hospital Sótero del Río.

El interno toma un rol muy activo en las distintas actividades de nuestro Departamento (Sala, pabellón, Centro Médico San Joaquín) y campos clínicos como el Hospital Sótero del Río y Hospital de La Florida, aplicando y profundizando conocimientos previos

7° Año Internado MEC-710 AB
Escogido normalmente por internos que quieren profundizar más en nuestra especialidad, ya sea para tener un mayor manejo del trauma para un futuro general de zona o una posterior especialización en Ortopedia y Traumatología

MEB-162 Curso Uso y Abusos del aparato locomotor
Curso de formación general dirigido a alumnos de nuestra Universidad, con el objetivo de dar a conocer los cuidados del Aparato Locomotor y sus patologías ms frecuentes.

Postgrado

Programa de Postgrado en Ortopedia y traumatología

Con el objetivo de formar especialistas en los conocimientos, habilidades y competencias a nivel de excelencia en 3 años de duración. Se realiza en campos clínicos de la Red de Salud UC, Sótero del Rio, Hospital del Trabajador y Hospital de La Florida.

Programa complementario de perfeccionamiento en diferentes áreas de la especialidad:

• Cirugía reconstructiva articular y cadera.
• Cirugía artroscópica, rodilla y hombro.
• Cirugía de columna
• Cirugía de mano y microcirugía.
• Ortopedia infantil
• Cirugía de tobillo y pie

Investigación

El Departamento de Ortopedia y Traumatología cuenta con una Unidad de Investigación Clínica (UIC), cuya misión es servir de soporte y  complemento metodológico para el desarrollo e implantación.

1. La Investigación clínica en el área de la Ortopedia y Traumatología.

2. Sistemas de manejo de información clínica con fines de  investigación aplicada.

3. Una práctica clínica en torno de la medicina basada en la evidencia. Para concretizar nuestra misión nos hemos planteado como objetivos estratégicos:

  • Estandarizar las formas de trabajo relacionadas al quehacer investigativo  para obtener un producto de mejor calidad técnica.
  • Consolidar el compromiso de los distintos equipos del Departamento para lograr un mayor desarrollo de las ideas/proyectos que surgen de la actividad clínica.
  • Facilitar el encuentro de los miembros del Departamento en trabajos de Investigación integrando a los distintos actores (académicos, residentes, internos y alumnos).
  • Mejorar el índice de publicaciones generadas por miembros del Departamento.

En este contexto, las funciones que realiza la UIC se desarrollan en vertientes complementarias, como son:

1. Apoyo metodológico, epidemiológico, bioestadístico e informático a las actividades de investigación clínica.

2. Coordinación y Discusión de ideas o proyectos de los miembros del Departamento.

3. Consolidación de la base de datos de los pacientes atendidos por miembros del Departamento.

4. Revisión y discusión de los instrumentos de medición aplicables en el área de Ortopedia y Traumatología.

5. Coordinación, apoyo y asesoría científica para la presentación y publicación de los resultados generados de los diferentes proyectos de investigación del Departamento.

6. Apoyo a la elaboración de elementos docentes que incorporen elementos  de MBE.
